As mentioned in the VOP scheme API specifications, only the Latin characters set should be transported in the inter-PSP API messages, through UTF-8. This restriction has been agreed in order to overcome the complexity that would result if all European language-based characters were to be exchanged between all adhering PSPs.
Recommendations to convert the special characters into the Latin character set can be found in the "Best practices SEPA Requirements for an extended Character Set” and "SEPA Conversion Table" documents (EPC217-08).
However, some characters were excluded from this table because this table, intended for xml messages, did not include certain reserved xml characters which have another usage in JSON messages.
